So Close 03:04
Recklessly divide up all the junk that we've acquired You can keep the television and the sofa too I remember trying sometimes you'd just yawn and shrug We both deserve happiness and that's not what we Had in the long run Stare into the sun Everything is different now Hold my head up high Take it on the chin I'm sorry this is what I do Sorting out my feelings This is not all about You're not a bad guy You really did try Everything is better now Hold your head up high Cut my hand I wasn't all alone Check my head I've never felt so close So close so close

Two Actors 03:29
Stop making everything so black and white It’s so reductive, so reductive Do what you love best, don’t second guess Be honest, do the work, now do the work again Don’t act, react, don’t sit and wait for something good to happen Take advantage, breathe, and pay attention to the present moment It defines you Riddled with doubts Looming apocalyptic ingenue Don’t shut me out I’m human too, Imperfect just like you Fool, fool Retrace your steps, mining the depths Get real, now do the work, now do the work again Tenacity and patience are the key Would you agree Would you agree Riddled with doubts Looming apocalyptic ingenue Don’t shut me out I’m human too, Imperfect just like you Fool, fool Simply to notice whatever appears In each moment Not to change it Nor improve it Nor be rid of it

These are the facts Brightly reflected on the surface we lack Try to relax Just let it happen, there is no turning back Everybody needs somebody else Is there someone else No regrets, we were kids We did the best that we could do Throw no shade, for the kids Forever tangled up with you Is there someone new Everybody needs somebody else Is there someone else

Begin Again 03:47
Amber flashing lights Composure, forest for the trees Slowly thawing ice Thrashing and new, no guarantees Flourish and decline And now ascend Drinking up the sights Pull over, climb into the weeds Tags cover the sign Slick morning dew, late winter breeze Probably not tonight So out of tune Holy number nine Begin again Clairvoyant device Passed over, less than six degrees Debtors know the price Protest, lament, forgiveness please Flourish and decline And now ascend Holy number nine Begin again Bird has flown There’s nothing carved in stone Bird has flown There’s nothing carved in stone I’m feeling lucky Do your worst I’m feeling lucky Do your worst

Giving up Slowing down For the night In a two-star motel Where I dream That I die And come back But I’m still just myself Why can’t I just let you go Why can’t I just let you go We’ve been down this road before I’m awake So I rise Fill my tank And I’m back on the move I do fine by myself But the silence keeps whispering of you Why can’t I just let you go Why can’t I just let you go Why can’t I just let you go Why can’t I just let you go We’ve been down this road before Why can’t I just let you

Could try to explain Although nobody’s asking Whatever it takes Wait another day or two Just enough to make it through I like it this way Don't you, don’t you So glad to be here Forever distracted I think I might stay Wait another day or two Just enough to make it through I like it this way Don't you, don’t you You don’t deserve this You don’t deserve this at all
7.
Public display Smile and wave Lost in the fadeout Total cliche Acting my age Lost in the fadeout You can't edit me now Lost in the fadeout You can't edit me now Lost in the fadeout Lost in the fadeout Lost in the fadeout Avaricious fool You can't edit me now Lost in the fadeout Blinded by your nose You can't edit me now Lost in the fadeout What can I say Whom will they blame Lost in the fadeout I'm not afraid I'll find a way Lost in the fadeout Avaricious fool You can't edit me now Lost in the fadeout Blinded by your nose You can't edit me now Lost in the fadeout

2009 02:18
Some sow instructs Minerva No pearls before the swine Out to lunch but maybe You’ll see your reflection in a mirror Running out of time the revelator Take your place in line I've seen behind the curtains Beyond the chalk outline You were once a baby Desperate for your mother’s full attention And some father time is not a healer You were never mine I will not play the victim Your curse will not be mine Erase your imprint daily All good fallen leaves should curse their branches Since 2009 Time is not a healer You were never mine I will not play the victim Or wither on the vine

about

Bird Sanctuary deals primarily with the topics of separation & mindfulness. The lyrics are a scrapbook of personal observations & feelings from the last year. I did everything myself on this record, which I haven't done since my first record. I've been releasing music since 2011, but it feels like I'm just getting started.

For Benny, 2007-2022

Benny (aka Benzo, Bendito, Benson Burner, Scuba... destroyer of plush toys, perpetual-pup, studio sidekick, slayer of dragons) was by my side (or on my lap) during the making of nearly everything I've released up until the final stages of this record. Working from home as a composer (my day job) can be a very solitary lifestyle. I've had some difficult days in the last 15 years, but I was never alone, thanks to my friend Benny.
